50 Liverpool St, London, EC2M 7PY (Liverpool Street)

Liverpool Street

50 Liverpool Street is a bit of a fighter. After being the target of London’s first attack during the First World War it also survived plans to demolish the station. The 1979 conservation campaign was led by Sir John Bejtemen and Sir Spike Milligan, and the building subsequently became the muse for some pretty decent poetry. Design wise, think copper, steel mesh, stained timber and panelling – a good mix of classic and contemporary. Arched windows look into Liverpool Street Station itself.
You are in the middle of London – proper, early London. The City and its institutions spread out to the west and south, while a short walk east brings you to marvellous Spitalfields Market, which has the panoply of drinking, dining and shopping opportunities. Don’t forget to look through the 18th century streets with their Huguenot houses, and stop awhile in Hawksmoor’s early 18th century Christ Church: one of the UK’s finest baroque churches.
