Venue of the month: The Ampersand Hotel
Our guide to one of South Kensington’s most charming venues
Looking for one of London’s most delightful boutique hotels? The Ampersand in South Kensington is a pillar of English charm where you are made to feel so comfortable that you could swear you hadn’t left home.
Flanking the door, two large roman plant pots contained vibrant pink orchids. Picking up a fallen flower, one of the concierges playfully handed it to the receptionist who smiled and thanked him for his romantic gesture before attaching it to her hair. Bespoke lights pepper the hotels interior too, the centrepiece of which is a five floor high sculpture with winged bulbs from award winning German designer, Ingo Maurer.
The Games Room is multifunctional. Stimulating emerald greens and deep royal blues make it an inspiring space to have a meeting. If antiques are your thing, there are trinkets aplenty to discover – treasure hunt until your heart’s content (between meetings of course).
Wall-to-wall wine bottles, distinguished leather chairs and a solid oak table give The Wine Room a more masculine feel. The impressive atmosphere is perfect for meetings when you need to get down to business and, afterwards, unwind by taking part in one of The Ampersand’s cocktail making masterclasses, held in the same room.
The smell of fresh dough and cakes baking in the oven is complemented perfectly by subtle piano music and the hum of conversation provides the chorus that brings The Drawing Rooms to life between 2.30 and 5.30pm, when sandwiches and sweets are served – ideal for an afternoon break from work.
Tucked beneath the hotel’s Victorian cellar arches, Apero restaurant brings a contemporary Mediterranean menu, with an emphasis on sharing, to the heart of South Kensington. This etiquette reverberates through the hotel where employees and guests are kind and polite. With its attentive staff, seasonal food and meeting rooms to match any purpose, what’s not to love?
